A sauna vapour barrier is a foil layer installed on the warm (interior) side of the insulation, with every seam sealed, that stops hot, humid interior air from driving moisture into the wall where it would condense and cause rot and mould. Foil is used because it also reflects radiant heat back into the room. In a cold climate the vapour barrier is as important as the insulation itself — and it only works if it's continuous and its seams are taped.

Of all the hidden details in a cold-climate sauna, the vapour barrier is the one people most often underestimate — and the one whose absence does the most damage. It’s a thin foil layer you never see once the walls are finished, yet it’s what keeps the inside of your walls dry, sound and mould-free for the life of the sauna. What a vapour barrier does

A sauna’s interior air is hot and extremely humid — especially when you throw water on the stones for löyly. That warm, moist air naturally tries to move outward through the wall toward the cold exterior. If it reaches the cold parts of the wall, the moisture condenses inside the structure, soaking the insulation and framing and, over time, causing rot and mould — hidden where you can’t see it.

Why foil, specifically

Saunas use a foil vapour barrier — sauna-grade aluminium foil — rather than ordinary plastic, for two reasons:

Where it goes

The order of layers, from the sauna interior outward, is:

  1. Interior wood cladding (what you see).
  2. A small air gap behind the cladding, so the wood can dry.
  3. Foil vapour barrier, reflective face toward the room, seams sealed.
  4. Insulation in the stud cavity.
  5. The rest of the wall — sheathing, membrane, exterior cladding.

The foil goes on the warm side, behind the wood, with that air gap between. Put it on the wrong side, or leave it out, and the wall can’t stay dry.

The one thing you must get right: sealing

Here’s the detail that makes or breaks a vapour barrier: it only works if it’s continuous and sealed.

  • Tape every seam and lap with foil tape.
  • Detail carefully around the door frame and the heater’s wall pass-through — common leak points.
  • Leave no gaps for humid air to slip through.

An unsealed barrier barely works

A vapour barrier with open seams is little better than none — moisture simply passes through the gaps and condenses in the wall. Seal every seam and penetration with foil tape. The material matters, but the sealing is what actually protects the structure.
